Dimitrov Wins in Madrid After Interrupted Match
Dimitrov secured his third-round victory against Fearnley (6-4, 7-6) at the Madrid Masters 1000.
In the first set, Dimitrov proved opportunistic, saving 4 break points and converting his only two opportunities. He also needed just one set point to take the lead in the match.
With the score at 5-4 in the second set, the umpire had to suspend the match due to a power outage, which disrupted the electronic line-calling system and the scoreboard. The skycam above the court also could not be moved.
Both players left the Manolo Santana Stadium, with a return scheduled for 2 p.m. However, since the issue affected the entire city of Madrid, organizers were forced to cancel all matches for the day and reschedule them for April 29.
Dimitrov and Fearnley returned to the court the following day, right after the match between Swiatek and Shnaider. After saving another match point, Fearnley pushed the world No. 16 to a tie-break. After 3 match points, the 2017 Masters champion secured his spot in the round of 16.
He will face the winner of the match between Norrie and Diallo.
