Disappointment for Tiafoe, knocked out in the third round of the US Open by Struff
Frances Tiafoe, a semifinalist in New York in 2022 and 2024, arrived this year with high ambitions, stating he was capable of "beating Sinner and Alcaraz" during the tournament.
But the reality on the court proved different for the American, stopped in the third round by qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff (6-4, 6-3, 7-6). At 35 years old, the German is reliving his best form, having taken down Holger Rune in the previous round and reaching the round of 16 at the US Open for the first time in his career.
In his seventh match of the tournament (including qualifiers), the current world No. 144 will face Novak Djokovic or Cameron Norrie. Meanwhile, Tiafoe is set to drop significantly in the rankings, falling out of the top 25.
