Mannarino Advances to US Open Round of 16 After Shelton's Withdrawal
Adrian Mannarino, 37, advanced to the third round of the US Open following the withdrawal of world No. 6 Ben Shelton before the start of the fifth set (3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, w/o).
The veteran Frenchman, who has been in resurgent form over recent weeks, managed to challenge the recent Toronto Masters 1000 champion, pushing the match to a decisive set. After winning the fourth set and heading for a bathroom break, Mannarino learned of Shelton’s withdrawal, apparently due to a left shoulder issue.
Seeded No. 6 in New York, the American had arrived with high ambitions, two years after his semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic.
In the round of 16, Mannarino will face Jiri Lehecka for the first time in his career.
