Djokovic fails to shine as he reaches the second round at Roland Garros
The great Novak Djokovic is still not out. Far from his best tennis, the Serb nevertheless managed to secure the essential points, winning in 2 hours and 31 minutes (6-4, 7-6, 6-4).
Faced with a much better Pierre-Hugues Herbert than might have been expected, 'Nole' didn't shine, particularly on the return. Having played a solid enough match to qualify (29 winners, 19 unforced errors), Djokovic will need to step up his game very quickly if he is to retain his crown.
Without being unnecessarily alarmist or failing to recognize the Frenchman's excellent match (37 winners, 31 unforced errors), it's clear that the world number 1's level of play is far from adequate at the moment. That said, he still has at least one more warm-up round, at least on paper, as he takes on Roberto Carballes Baena (63rd), who defeated Constant Lestienne (6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2).
In any case, the 'Djoker' is still capable of surprising everyone by winning in Paris, as it wouldn't be the first time he's won a Grand Slam after a few dubious matches in the first week.
