Djokovic outclassed by Berrettini in Doha!
Novak Djokovic made an unsuccessful return to competition in Doha, beaten in the 1st round by Matteo Berrettini (7-6, 6-2).
The Serb, who hadn't played since retiring in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, didn't inherit an easy draw for his first match, having to face Berrettini, ranked 35th in the world.
Djokovic was the first to find himself in danger in this match, saving three break points at 2-2. In the next game, he also had three break point opportunities, but failed to convert them.
It was in the tie-break that the Italian showed his mettle, before breaking early in the second set.
Relying on his serve (13 aces, 75% first serves and 85% points won behind), Berrettini didn't crack, and went on to claim the first win of his career against Djokovic in five meetings.
He will face Tallon Griekspoor tomorrow for a place in the tournament quarter-finals.
For his part, Djokovic will now prepare for the American hard-court tour, with the Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami.
