Djokovic reflects on his difficulty in winning Roland Garros: "I was frustrated that I couldn't win this title"
Novak Djokovic had to wait until 2016 and three lost finals (against Nadal in 2012 and 2014, against Wawrinka in 2015) to finally get his hands on the French Open trophy.
At the age of 28, he finally became one of the legends to have won every Grand Slam on the calendar.
In an interview with the Head brand, in which he looks back on the highlights of his career, Djokovic shared his emotions about his victory over Andy Murray in the final: "I always dreamed of winning Wimbledon and being world No.1.
Once that was done, I wondered what my next goal would be.
It was to win as many Grand Slams as possible, but also to win them all. Roland Garros was the only one I was missing.
In 2016, I'd already lost several finals and was feeling very frustrated at not having won that title. But year after year, I was getting closer and closer.
It finally happened in 2016, in front of one of my childhood idols, Gustavo Kuerten.
After the win, I asked him if I could copy his celebration and make a heart on clay.
He agreed, so I did it. At that moment, I was the winner of all the Grand Slam tournaments in a row, so it was something unique."
