Djokovic takes advantage of Djere's withdrawal to reach the third round
In the end, the reunion was short-lived. While some predicted a hard-fought duel similar to their third-round clash last year, this was not to be, as Laslo Djere broke down physically in the second set and was forced to retire (6-4, 6-4, 2-0 ab.).
However, everything seemed to be in place for a great battle. Djokovic didn't seem to be at his best against a very poised Djere. He took the first set by accelerating at the best of times, but was then largely dominated by his compatriot in the second act.
After a break and not far from a double-break, he finally took advantage of his opponent's physical relapse, visibly affected by a back injury, to win the second set and finally benefit from Djere's withdrawal.
The world No. 2, visibly in average form, can now take a breather.
For a place in the last 16, he will face the surprise winner of the last tournament in Montreal, Alexei Popyrin.
