Eliminated in Monte-Carlo, Zverev Joins the List of No. 1 Seeds Ousted in Their First Match in the Principality

Zverev fell in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 7-5) against Berrettini in his opening match in Monte-Carlo. Despite his final in Australia, the world No. 2 has struggled to impress in the first part of the season. Knocked out early in the Principality, the German was clearly outmatched by the Italian.

He now joins the list of No. 1 seeds who lost in their first match at Monte-Carlo (since 1990). Among the players on this list are Sampras (1995 and 1997) and Djokovic (2016 and 2022).
