Monfils Falls to Rublev in Monte-Carlo Second Round
The adventure ends this Wednesday for the Frenchman. After defeating Marozsan in the first round (4-6, 6-1, 6-1), Monfils failed to reach the round of 16. The 38-year-old player lost to Rublev (6-4, 7-6).
Despite some flashes of brilliance, the Frenchman proved too inconsistent against the Russian, with costly service errors at critical moments. He particularly had the chance to level the match after breaking at 5/4 and holding four set points but collapsed on serve with three double faults.
Rublev, meanwhile, won his first match under Safin’s guidance and will face Arthur Fils in the round of 16.
