Errani/Vavassori and McNally/Musetti Pairs First to Qualify for US Open Mixed Doubles Quarterfinals
This Tuesday marked the start of the new mixed doubles tournament format introduced by the US Open for its 2025 edition. As a result, numerous stars from the singles draw were invited by the organizers during Fan Week. The first round of 16 matches took place early in the day in the American capital.
Defending champions of the tournament, the two Italian players Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who received a wild card, defeated the pair of Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, the No. 2 seeds (4-2, 4-2).
Errani and Vavassori will face the winner of the match between Venus Williams/Reilly Opelka and Karolina Muchova/Andrey Rublev for a spot in the semifinals.
On the other hand, it’s already over for the pair of Naomi Osaka and Gaël Monfils. The Japanese and French players fought hard but were unable to overcome Catherine McNally and Lorenzo Musetti.
In a closely contested match, the American and Italian duo won in two sets (5-3, 4-2) and now await their next opponents in the quarterfinals, who will be either the pair of Iga Swiatek/Casper Ruud or the duo of Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe.
