Fernandez dominates Kalinskaya and wins the biggest title of her career in Washington
Leylah Fernandez claimed the WTA 500 in Washington after a one-sided final against Anna Kalinskaya (6-1, 6-2).
Both players, unseeded, managed to reach the final thanks to solid performances. Fernandez took down two top 20 members (Pegula and Rybakina), while Kalinskaya gained momentum by defeating Tauson in the quarterfinals and Raducanu in the semifinals.
The final started late due to the unpredictable weather in the U.S. capital.
Unyielding in this match, Fernandez only conceded three games to her opponent. 1 hour and 9 minutes of play were enough for her to capture the biggest title of her career.
Runner-up at the US Open in 2021, Fernandez will arrive in Montreal with a nice confidence boost. She will climb 12 spots in the WTA rankings tomorrow and will be ranked 24th in the world.
