"The rest of the year has been pretty shitty, to be honest," Fernandez jokes after her title in Washington

At the end of a great week, Leylah Fernandez claimed her first title in Washington. She defeated Russia's Kalinskaya in two quick sets (6-1, 6-2). During the post-match press conference, the 22-year-old player made light of her up-and-down season so far, despite this strong performance in the U.S. capital.
"You can say it, the rest of the year hasn’t been great (laughs). It’s been pretty shitty, to be honest! (laughs) I guess in Washington, the week was just good overall. I’ve been working really hard for a long time. It all started with a good vibe, good energy with the team members, a dinner with the other Canadians who were at the tournament.
There was always a good atmosphere from the start, then on the court, I was having a lot more fun, and I was able to play well in front of a big crowd. I guess everything just clicked that week and, hopefully, it will continue in Montreal."
The Canadian will head straight to the WTA 1000 in Montreal. In the first round, she will face Australia's Joint. It will be their second consecutive matchup after Washington.
