Fernandez reaches Washington final after tough battle against Rybakina
Leylah Fernandez makes a strong comeback to the spotlight by securing her place in the final of the WTA 500 in Washington.
Facing Elena Rybakina in the semifinals, the Canadian managed to keep up the pace in a match where breaks were rare (two in the second set). Trailing 7-6, 5-4 with Rybakina serving to close it out, Fernandez turned the tables to win 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 after 3 hours and 12 minutes of play.
Qualifying for the seventh final of her career and her second at the WTA 500 level, the 22-year-old could face Emma Raducanu in a rematch of the 2021 US Open final. However, the Brit will first need to defeat Anna Kalinskaya.
