Crushed by Cerundolo (6-0, 6-3), Fognini falls in the first round of a tournament for the third consecutive time, after Naples and Marrakech.
At 37 years old, the world No. 113 may have just experienced his final moments in the principality. He spoke to Eurosport after the match:
"It was a one-sided match, I couldn’t play. Obviously, during this period, my tennis level has dropped a lot, and I struggled to keep up with the pace of this kind of player. You have to accept it—now, it’s time to try again.
I don’t know what will happen. I’m aware that after being away for so long, my level has dropped significantly, and it shows. You have to accept it, try, and try again. It might have been my last Monte-Carlo."
