Medvedev defeated his compatriot Khachanov in three sets (7-5, 4-6, 6-4). He advances to the second round in Monte-Carlo and will face Muller.
Despite winning a title in Rome in 2023, Daniil Medvedev is not a fan of clay. Often critical of this part of the season, the Russian made a surprising statement to Tennis TV:
"It’s really funny. After Indian Wells and Miami, which are pretty slow surfaces, I started playing on clay again. And, I swear to God, I don’t see a difference, except that you slide and the ball bounces higher.
Sometimes there are bad bounces, the movement is different, but in terms of speed, I’d almost say clay is faster than hardcourt. At the very least, it’s certainly not much slower."
