Fognini on his stunning 2015 US Open victory over Nadal: What happened in New York is memorable

In the third round of the 2015 US Open, Fabio Fognini put in one of the finest performances of his career.

Trailing Rafael Nadal two sets to nil, the Italian found the resources to prevail (3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4).

Nine years after this prestigious victory, 37-year-old Fognini looked back on his win over the illustrious Spanish champion.

"I'd also beaten him in Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona before that. I remember it very well because it's not often you beat him.

In total, against him, I lost fifteen times and won four. But yes, maybe the best success was the one in New York.

A few weeks ago, I was talking to his press attaché in Turin. Well, the truth is, that match hurt him.

He said to me: 'Fabio, now I can tell you. Rafa suffered when he played against you. It was a sensational match.

I remember Tiger Woods was in his box, and after the first two sets, he got up to leave. He said he'd be back for the next match.

Of course, my game was unpredictable. What happened in New York is memorable," he elaborated for Relevo.

Rafael Nadal
