Fonseca after winning the Next Gen ATP Finals: "It's crazy to see how much I've progressed physically and mentally".
João Fonseca rounded off his perfect week in Jeddah with a win.
In the final of the Next Gen ATP Finals, the Brazilian beat Learner Tien despite losing the first set and became the second youngest player to win this tournament after Jannik Sinner in 2019.
At just 18, Fonseca is sure to be one of the players to watch next year.
After winning this trophy, he stated his ambitions for the ATP website.
"If you had told João at the beginning of January that he was going to do everything he has achieved this year, he would have thought it would be incredible.
It's crazy to see how much I've progressed physically and mentally. I've been solid, winning matches against players in the top 50, then the top 20.
I'm proud of myself, but I'm not satisfied. My dream is to become world number 1.
Of course, now that I've won the Next Gen ATP Finals, I want to enjoy this week and celebrate with my family. I'm very grateful to have experienced this kind of emotion this year.
I often talk to my coach about how I like to play big matches in tough situations. I love playing against the best, I love the pressure.
I'm part of the world of tennis where you have to be brave. I've definitely improved at this level," Fonseca explained.
