Fritz before meeting Zverev: "A few points here and there".
Taylor Fritz is having a very successful 2024 season. World number 5 and finalist at the US Open, the American logically qualified for the year-end Masters. Buoyed by a rather high level of play, he qualified for the semi-finals by beating Daniil Medvedev and Alex De Minaur.
Indeed, despite losing to Jannik Sinner, Fritz came second in his pool and will now play in the semi-finals of this Masters tournament. To reach the final, he will have to get the better of Alexander Zverev, who has been very impressive all week.
Asked about this upcoming confrontation, the 27-year-old declared: "I think that before the three meetings this year, we often had close matches. He beat me at Wimbledon once in five sets (2018). He beat me once at Wimbledon in four tight sets (2021).
Before that, I'd won twice against him. It wasn't, I think, one-sided. I have the impression that it was always very close between us. Looking back, I think I probably should have lost at Wimbledon (this year, in the Round of 16).
The US Open could have gone either way, honestly (four-set victory in the quarter-finals). The match was very close, as it often is between us. I was able to take the last three games. It's not as if it was easy.
I think our games match up well. Whoever does certain things better wins. When you have two players who are big servers against each other, it can always come down to a few points here and there."
