Garin reacts to his Davis Cup disqualification: "Thanks to the ITF for not worrying about my health".
This Davis Cup weekend was the scene of some unlikely incidents. After the virulent handshake between Arthur Fils and Thiago Seyboth Wild, another event created controversy at another match.
In the fourth match between Chile and Belgium (the Europeans were leading two games to one at the time), Cristian Garin was disqualified against Zizou Bergs.
Bergs, who had just broken at 5-5 in the third set, ran to his chair, but collided with his opponent in the process, injuring him in the face.
Garin, who refused to resume play, had also asked for Bergs to be disqualified, but this was not forthcoming.
Instead, the chair umpire issued several consecutive warnings and Garin was disqualified, sending Belgium into the second round of the Davis Cup play-off against Australia.
A few hours after the end of the match, Cristian Garin was incensed. On his Instagram account, he reacted to what happened.
"I still can't believe they disqualified me. I can't believe the chair umpire wanted to force me to continue the match despite my dizziness after 2h40 of high-intensity play.
I've loved this sport for years, I've seen millions of matches and I've never seen, or even thought of experiencing anything like this in my life.
It saddens me to finish in this way, especially after all the effort put in this week and all the work done by the team.
Thanks to the ITF for not worrying about my health. Thanks to all the Chileans. It's a difficult moment, but we'll carry on," wrote the player on the social network.
