Gaubas, First Lithuanian Player in History to Reach the Third Round of a Masters 1000
35 years after the creation of the ATP Tour and the tournaments now known as Masters 1000, Vilius Gaubas made Lithuanian tennis history this Friday.
Coming through the qualifiers, the world No. 154 had already eliminated Damir Dzumhur (7-6, 2-6, 6-4) in the first round, securing the very first main-draw victory of his career. Today, facing Denis Shapovalov, the 20-year-old player boldly seized his opportunity on the Pietrangeli court, claiming the biggest win of his career with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph.
Thanks to these two convincing victories, a Lithuanian player will compete in the third round of a tournament in this category for the first time in history. He will attempt to continue his remarkable run on Sunday against Alexander Zverev or Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
