Gauff comes through against Svitolina at the US Open
Coco Gauff passed a tough test to qualify for the last 16 of the US Open on Friday. The defending champion turned the tables on Elena Svitolina to win in two hours and three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-3).
Initially dominated, the American managed to break in the middle of the 2nd set to make the difference. But she had another scare at the end of the 3rd set. She led 5-2, 40-00 on her serve, but lost the game, failing to convert any of her three consecutive match points. But she recovered perfectly, winning the next four points to make the break and close out the match.
Gauff will now face Marta Kostyuk or Emma Navarro in her bid to reach the quarter-finals.
