Gauff Defeated in Opening Match on Grass Return
Gauff faced Wang Xinyu in her opening match at the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin.
Fresh off her victory at Roland-Garros, the transition to grass did not go as planned for the world No. 2, who was eliminated in two quick sets (6-3, 6-3). Struggling with her first serve (38%), the American conceded many crucial points on her service games. Unable to create favorable opportunities, she only managed to earn a single break point throughout the entire match.
She exits early against the world No. 49. Coming through the qualifiers, the Chinese player, on the other hand, is having an impressive tournament, having defeated Jabeur and Kasatkina, among others, in the previous rounds.
Now through to the quarterfinals, she will next face Spain’s world No. 10, Badosa.
