Gauff Savors Her Life on the Tour: "I Feel Like I'm Exactly Where I'm Supposed to Be"
Coco Gauff spoke out just days before competing in the WTA Finals in the Saudi capital.
Gauff has had a good season. The 21-year-old American won the WTA 1000 in Wuhan in recent weeks but, more importantly, added a second Grand Slam title to her record after her victory against Aryna Sabalenka in the Roland-Garros final.
However, the world number 3 is not satisfied and has other goals in mind for the rest of her career. She will be in Riyadh in the coming days to compete in the WTA Finals, a tournament where she is the defending champion.
"I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. I feel like this is the life I wanted for myself and that I've been working for. I have to say that during the first four years of my career, I couldn't believe I was really on the tour and living my dream.
Achieving your goals is certainly what success is, at least in the literal sense of tennis. But in life in general, I think happiness is the greatest reward one can have.
When I was a child, I absolutely wanted to become the best tennis player in the world. That was my goal. And it still is today. I want to reach the number one spot one day and win more Grand Slam tournaments. I am far from satisfied.
As an adult, I now think about other aspects and other life goals off the court. Whereas when I was younger, I only thought about tennis. I am determined to be my own best supporter, my own best friend on the court, to stay positive and to believe in myself.
There are sometimes moments during tournaments when I don't necessarily believe in myself. So yes, I think it's going to be an ongoing battle for me throughout my career," Gauff assured Tennis Up To Date before beginning the defense of her title at the WTA Finals in Riyadh in early November.
