Gauff Secures Her Spot in Roland-Garros Quarterfinals for the 5th Consecutive Time
Gauff faced Alexandrova in the opening match of the day on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland-Garros.
A semifinalist last year, Gauff maintained her momentum against the Russian player and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Parisian tournament. In the first set, the American delivered a crushing 6-0 to her opponent, capitalizing on Alexandrova's 0/5 break point conversion and 15 unforced errors from the world No. 20.
In the following set, Alexandrova put up more resistance, forcing Gauff to work harder to secure the win (6-0, 7-5). Over the course of the nearly 1-hour-and-30-minute match, the 2023 US Open champion proved more clutch in key moments, as reflected in the break point statistics. Both players had the same number of opportunities on their opponent's serve (9), but while the Russian converted only one break point, her opponent managed to capitalize on five.
Still, Alexandrova performed better than last year, when she was eliminated by Bulgaria's Tomova in the first round. Gauff, a finalist this year in Rome and Madrid, will face the winner of the all-American clash between Keys and Baptiste, scheduled as the third match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen this Monday. At just 21 years old, she will now play her 9th Grand Slam quarterfinal.
