Gauff upsets Bencic to reach Australian Open quarter-finals
Another great match-up in the last 16 of the Australian Open 2025.
On Rod Laver Arena, just moments after Aryna Sabalenka's victory over Mirra Andreeva, Coco Gauff met Belinda Bencic.
The Swiss, who returns to the circuit after a year's absence due to pregnancy, is back to her best.
The 27-year-old has eliminated Jelena Ostapenko and Naomi Osaka on her way to the second week.
Opposite her, Coco Gauff is in fine form, following on from her title at the WTA Finals at the end of last year. The American didn't lose a single set to eliminate Sofia Kenin, Jodie Burrage and Leylah Fernandez.
In fact, it was Bencic who got off to the best start and won the first set. But Gauff didn't give up and took the upper hand in the last two sets.
In the end, she prevailed 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in 2 hours 26 minutes and reached the Australian Open quarter-finals for the second time in succession.
Eliminated at the start of the second week, Bencic can console herself with the fact that she has moved up more than 100 places in the rankings.
Above 250th place, the former world number 4 will be back in the top 160 by the end of the tournament.
For her part, Gauff will meet Paula Badosa for a place in the last four. The Spaniard, who will be making her return to the top 10, eliminated Olga Danilovic (6-1, 7-6).
This will be an exciting match to follow, especially as the two players are currently on a three-way tie in the head-to-heads.
