Pegula eliminated in the third round of the Australian Open by Danilovic

Another surprise in the women's draw at the Australian Open on Friday. Jessica Pegula, number 7 seed and finalist at the last US Open, was eliminated in the third round by Olga Danilovic.

The Serbian, always capable of some fine shots, has now beaten the American and qualified for the last 16 in Melbourne for the first time in her career.

After 1h30 of play, the 23-year-old left-hander won a tight first set. Solid on her serve, she saved all six break points she faced.

After the tie-break, which she dominated seven points to three, Danilovic took the lead in the second to claim one of the finest victories of her career (7-6, 6-1).

Olga Danilovic will now meet Paula Badosa for a place in the quarter-finals.

For her part, the Spaniard, who was hampered by the playing conditions at the start of the day, came through after a three-set duel with Marta Kostyuk.

The two players have not faced each other since the Guadalajara tournament in 2019, when Danilovic won.

For her part, Pegula, eliminated by Clara Burel in the second round of the same tournament, confirms her difficulties in Melbourne. She has never progressed beyond the Australian Open quarter-finals.
