Giron, after his Newport title: "Better late than never".
Three days before his 31st birthday, Marcos Giron won his first ever ATP title on the grass of Newport. The American defeated compatriot Alex Michelsen, saving a match point in the final (6-7, 6-3, 7-5).
His victory means he is now ranked 38th in the world, the highest ranking of his career. Delighted, he also praised his young opponent after the match.
Marcos Giron: "Better late than never. I'll take it. There are so many people I can thank and I couldn't be luckier to have them in my life.
My family, my coaches, my friends. It's really special for me, but also for all the help and support they've given me over the years.
Honestly, Alex played an incredible tournament, an incredible match. It's unreal, he's only 19.
We also trained together. On the court, he's so mature, he's so good. He's got a great future ahead of him. I'm happy to win while I still can!"
