Giron rides the American wave at the final Newport event

On Sunday, Marcos Giron won the 48th and final edition of the Hall of Fame Open in Newport (the tournament will no longer be on the ATP calendar in 2025). In the final on American grass, he saved a match point to defeat his young compatriot Alex Michelsen after 3 sets (6-7 [4], 6-3, 7-5) and 2 1/2 hours of battle. He concluded the match by serving his 13th ace.

3 days before his 31st birthday, Giron won the first ATP title of his career. In the process, he becomes the 9th oldest player in the Open era to lift his first ATP trophy. No. 1 is Paolo Lorenzi, who was 34 years and 220 days old when he triumphed on the clay of Kitzbuhel in 2016.

Giron dominated the genuine American wave that swept through the Rhode Island city this week. There were 12 Americans in the 28-player final draw, then 10 out of 16 in the 2nd round, 6 out of 8 in the quarter-finals and 4 out of 4 in the semi-finals.

This is only the 4th time since the start of the 2005 season that a single nationality has been represented in the last four of an ATP tournament, but already the 3rd time for the USA (Dallas 2022, Delray Beach 2024, Newport 2024).
