Gracheva Swept Aside by Kudermetova in Cincinnati Quarterfinals
Varvara Gracheva was abruptly halted this Friday in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati.
The Frenchwoman, who came through qualifying, was no match for Veronika Kudermetova, ranked 36th in the world. After just 1 hour and 3 minutes of play, she fell 6-1, 6-2 on the Grandstand court.
With six matches already played since the start of her tournament, Gracheva was likely weighed down by fatigue and never managed to unsettle her opponent. Still, she will make her return to the top 100, gaining 20 spots in the rankings.
Kudermetova, who peaked at No. 9 in 2022, reaches the semifinals of a WTA 1000 for the first time since 2023, when she made back-to-back semifinals in Madrid and Rome. She will have to wait until the end of the day to find out whether Coco Gauff or Jasmine Paolini will face her on Sunday.
