Halep will play an exhibition match this summer during the Iasi tournament
The WTA tournament in Iasi announced excellent news in recent hours.
After its first two editions as a WTA 125 event, the Romanian event became a WTA 250 last year and saw Mirra Andreeva win the very first title of her career on the main circuit after Elina Avanesyan retired in the third set.
Tournament director Daniel Dobre confirmed that Iasi will continue to be a WTA 250 tournament for at least the next three seasons.
The 2025 edition will take place from July 14 to 20 in the Romanian city. On this occasion, Dobre confirmed that Simona Halep, who announced her retirement following the WTA 250 tournament in Cluj-Napoca in early February, will be present in Iasi for an exhibition match.
"We are happy to have Simona Halep at the Iasi tournament. She will play an exhibition match, although at the moment we don't have many details.
Of course, we would love to have her in the main draw, but as you know, she announced her retirement from tennis.
We will provide more details soon. We want to have a tournament as interesting as possible, and I am glad that Simona will be there," Dobre assured Golazo.
Other guests who have made their mark on Romanian tennis are expected to be present for this exhibition, including former professional player Andrei Pavel.
As for the official tournament, the reigning champion Mirra Andreeva should also be present, as well as Romanian players Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian.
