Halys falls to Fritz in the Geneva tournament's round of 16

After his win against Jaume Munar (4-6, 6-3, 7-6), Quentin Halys earned the right to challenge Taylor Fritz, the number 1 seed in the ATP 250 tournament in Geneva. The world number 4, exempted from the first round, arrived fresh in Switzerland after his early exit in Rome against his compatriot Marcos Giron (7-6, 7-6).
In a balanced match, the American ultimately found the resources to prevail in two sets (6-4, 7-6). Both men were generally strong on their service games, even though the first two games of the match were won by the returners.
However, subsequently, both players were completely in control of their serves. Fritz broke at the perfect moment, in the last game of the first set, to take the lead.
Later on, a tiebreak decided the second set. But, there too, the finalist of the last US Open tightened the game to win and thus qualify for his first quarterfinal on clay in 2025.
He is the second player to reach this stage of the competition in Geneva this year, after Karen Khachanov, who advanced directly to the quarters due to Kei Nishikori's withdrawal.
For a spot in the semifinals, he might face another French player, Arthur Rinderknech, should the latter overcome Hubert Hurkacz in a match scheduled for this Wednesday in the Swiss tournament.
