"His video is a reflection of his personality," Pegula discusses Monfils' upcoming retirement
On October 1st, Gaël Monfils announced the end of his career. The Frenchman will play his final season on the tour in 2026, before retiring at the end of the season in one year. He will be 40 years old then.
In a tribute video from his friends Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, and Gilles Simon, as well as his wife Elina Svitolina, Monfils announced that he is looking forward to preparing for his final months on the tour. Currently in Wuhan, world No. 6 on the WTA tour, Jessica Pegula, reacted to the Frenchman's announcement last week.
"The video was really cool. You even see Elina (Svitolina) speaking French. It was like a movie, it was awesome. I love the way he announced his retirement. He's going to have a whole year where everyone will just be excited to see him but also sad to see him go.
I feel like he's going to get a lot of good courts, bigger courts. It seems like a good initiative. I think his video is a reflection of his personality. The approach to retirement, it just depends on the person.
Personally, preparing a year in advance would stress me out. I might only play half a season if I announced my retirement. A full year is a lot.
But I think that's so him. He'll put on a big show at every match he plays, even if his schedule will probably be lighter than before," Pegula assured for Tennis Up To Date.
