Humbert on his injury: "I was told to stop for three weeks"
Ugo Humbert appeared this Tuesday with a large bandage on his hand during his match against Alexei Popyrin.
After his defeat in three sets, the Frenchman revealed that he was suffering from a fracture of the fifth metacarpal after slipping in his hotel room during the UTS.
He explained his discomfort during the match: "Yes, I was in a lot of pain. I was happy to be on the court. I just had an ultrasound, which shows that my condition hasn’t worsened, which is a good thing.
The doctor told me that with the splint, I could play if the pain wasn’t too severe. But I was in pain, so I had an X-ray on Sunday morning and an ultrasound after the match.
It would have been worse for me not to step on the court today. I’m very proud that I was able to see how far I could go. I fought hard.
I didn’t say anything during the whole match, but luckily, it’s on clay—otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to play. On clay, I have a bit more time to turn my backhand, so I had to come back from very far behind.
It changes my game. I think this match will help me for others, and as long as the doctor allows it, I’ll keep playing. We’ll see.
I was told to stop for three weeks, then resume, and if I felt better, to play—but the healing could take longer. I can’t just sit around drinking Actimel and doing nothing.
It drives me crazy not being able to play. I want to try, even if I lose. I chose to go to Munich. It’s something I never do, and maybe it’s better for me because the clay there is very slow."
