"I did my best today, I couldn't have done more," Sinner's first words after his defeat in the US Open final
Jannik Sinner will not retain his title at the US Open. The Italian, who had a perfect run until the final, met his match in the championship match against Carlos Alcaraz.
The Spaniard won in four sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in 2 hours and 42 minutes) and also reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking from his opponent, who had held the top spot in tennis uninterrupted since June 2024.
During the trophy ceremony, Sinner stepped up to the microphone on the podium and addressed the spectators at Arthur Ashe Stadium after his defeat—his 10th career loss to his great rival in 15 meetings.
"First, I'd like to start with Carlos (Alcaraz) and his team. Congratulations on this title—you all do a fantastic job together, and I know there's an enormous amount of work behind this performance. Carlos was better than me today. Enjoy it—it's a very special moment for all of you.
A word for my team: thank you for supporting me and understanding me every day. I know how hard you work, how much energy you've dedicated so that I could make it to the final.
Despite everything, it's been an incredible season. I've played several finals, and I'm very happy to share this moment with you, with my family at home, and with my friends. I did my best today, I couldn't have done more.
I'd also like to thank everyone who makes this tournament so special. I know this is your last tournament (he's speaking to Stacey Allaster, the tournament director)—you've always tried your best for us.
We're all very sad that you won't be here next year. A word for the ball kids—I know it's been three long weeks with the qualifiers, and you've done an excellent job. I look forward to coming back next year.
And to the crowd, thank you—you've been incredible. Seeing a full stadium, not just for the final but throughout the tournament, is what makes this event so special. I'm very happy to spend time on this court; we do our best to put on the best show possible. Thank you all, and see you next year," he said on the court.
