Alcaraz Pulls Ahead Against Sinner and Nears a Second US Open Title
The suspense is at its peak in this long-awaited 2025 US Open final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The two players are putting on a great show for the spectators at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
After an excellent start to the match, the Spaniard quickly pulled away and won the first set in under 40 minutes. Sinner, the world number one and defending champion, then responded.
On his only break opportunity in the first two sets, the Italian broke serve, before holding his own serve at the end of the set to level the match at one set apiece, thereby definitively preventing his rival from becoming the first player in the Open Era to win the US Open without dropping a single set.
The third set would set the tone for the rest of the match. For the third time in three sets, Alcaraz earned at least one break point in his first return game, and unlike the previous set, he was effective, capitalizing on a major unforced error from Sinner on the forehand after a strong first serve to break immediately.
Trailing 0-30 in the following game, the Spaniard then raised his level to string together four consecutive points, including a beautiful volley after a well-executed sequence to consolidate his break. With momentum on his side, Alcaraz kept rolling.
The world number two took advantage of a few unforced errors from his opponent early in the rallies, but also delighted the Arthur Ashe crowd to secure a double break and run away with the third set.
In the end, Carlos Alcaraz won the set without much trouble and is now just one set away from a second crown in New York, which would allow him to reclaim the world number one ranking from his opponent of the day (6-2, 3-6, 6-1 after 1 hour and 50 minutes).
