I need to take some time and think about my future," Berrettini downcast after first-round exit at Wimbledon
During the press conference following his first-round loss to Majchrzak at Wimbledon, Berrettini opened up about the struggles he’s currently facing. Plagued by injuries, the Italian wants to take time to reflect on what he wants to do in the future:
"I’m sorry for the people who helped me get here physically. Honestly, this isn’t how I want to be on the court. I need to take some time and think about my future. I have to find another way to stay on the court because it’s starting to weigh on me. My team thought I might feel better here, but it didn’t work out.
I need a few days. The match just ended—maybe I should wait a bit before speaking. But tennis has been quite tough for me these past few weeks. Physically, I didn’t feel too bad. What was missing was my usual attitude, the one that defined my career.
These have been difficult weeks. So many lows, so many moments where I had to decide to keep trying. Relapse after relapse—it’s been complicated. Too often, I focused more on the physical side to try and come back, without paying attention to how I felt mentally.
Today, I probably didn’t feel ready to compete in the long run. I don’t know what I should do or what’s waiting for me. This time, I feel depressed, and I think it’s somewhat normal given everything that’s happened over the years. It’s normal for someone to feel a bit tired and need time to think and figure out what to do.
