I never doubted myself for a single second and I tried to give it my all," Alcaraz reflects on the third set of his final
Carlos Alcaraz appeared at a press conference after his epic final victory against Jannik Sinner, won in a fifth-set tiebreak.
When asked about his comeback after trailing 2 sets to 0, he explained his mindset at that moment.
"I had to fight relentlessly. I had to believe in myself. When he broke me at the start of the third set, I felt like everything was in his favor. That was my feeling at the beginning of the third set.
I tried to push those thoughts out of my mind and keep going, fighting nonstop. I always tell myself that in certain moments, I have to give everything, no matter what—whether I’m behind or in the super tiebreak of the fifth set.
I thought it was time to give it all, to not be afraid of making mistakes. Today, I think it was about believing in myself. I never doubted myself for a single second; I tried to give it my all.
The match isn’t over until I’ve won the last point. I was one point away from losing, but it’s happened many times that players come back after facing match point in a Grand Slam final, or even in other matches.
I wanted to be one of those players who saves a match point in a Grand Slam final and ends up winning. I always believe in that. I never doubted myself, not even on those saved match points.
I was thinking one point at a time. Just one point, then another, and then trying to save the match and keep believing. That’s what was on my mind.
