I thought the recovery would be faster": Krejcikova reflects on her back injury that kept her away from the tour
Quietly, it was in Strasbourg that Barbora Krejcikova, absent from the WTA tour for six months due to a back injury, made her return. She lost in the first round to Magda Linette (6-3, 6-3).
For the WTA website, Krejcikova reflected on her time away and how she prepared for her comeback:
"Last year was very difficult with all the ups and downs. I feel good and I’m happy to be back. If I finish the week without back pain, it will be a good week. Last year, for two or three months, I was living with pain every day.
After Wimbledon, it got worse. In Asia, I had to withdraw because it was too much. I managed to push through the pain to play the WTA Finals in Riyadh. But in the end, I had to stop to solve the problem. That’s what I’ve been doing these past six months.
It was a tricky period because I thought the recovery would be faster. I was just waiting for the moment when I wouldn’t feel any pain. I told myself: 'I won’t play until I’ve eliminated the pain.'"
Krejcikova was then ready to return to training in early March, but a virus forced her to delay her comeback:
"It was tough because I felt comfortable with my shots. But I had to postpone it. So I only started playing points again two weeks ago.
It’s recent, but I’ve been training for a while and I wanted to give it a try. I want to play in Paris, so that’s why I entered here (in Strasbourg).
