I understand exactly what he's going through because I've been through it," Djokovic responds to Zverev's shocking remarks
After his 99th victory at Wimbledon, Djokovic attended his usual press conference. When asked about world No. 3 Zverev's comments regarding his mental struggles, the Serbian player admitted he fully understood what his fellow tour player was experiencing:
"Sascha and I have a great relationship. I really like him as a person. We talk a lot about tennis and other life topics. We had the chance, after our training session here before Wimbledon, to discuss some technical aspects on the court. He asked me, and I shared my experience with him. He knows he can always count on me. I understand exactly what he's going through because I've been through it many times.
Situations where you feel empty, with less joy or less happiness while playing, where you're not delivering the kind of results on the court that you're aiming for. It’s all part of the process. You can’t always be at your best. He’s a player who has played a lot this year in terms of schedule. Maybe he’s just overwhelmed by the number of tournaments.
Perhaps he needs to take a break and refresh his mind. He and his family know best. I empathize with him. I know mental health is a topic that hasn’t been discussed much in the tennis world before. But I think it deserves more attention. I applaud the players who have the courage to speak up about it. I truly wish him all the best. If he needs me, I’m here.
