"I will miss tennis, but I'm ready for the next chapter of my life," Kvitova bids farewell to Wimbledon after loss to Navarro
The beautiful story between Petra Kvitova and Wimbledon has officially come to an end. The two-time champion (2011 and 2014), who received a wild card for her final appearance before retiring at the end of the summer during the US Open, was defeated in the first round by Emma Navarro (6-3, 6-1 in 1 hour of play).
At 35 years old, the Czech player, who once reached world No. 2, gave a final speech on Court 1 after her last Wimbledon appearance ended in defeat against the American, currently ranked 10th in the world.
"Thank you all for this incredible atmosphere—it was very special to play on this beautiful court. Well done to Emma (Navarro) and good luck. I wish I could have played against you a little longer, but never mind!
Having this chance to play Wimbledon one last time means so much to me. This place holds the best memories I could ever wish for. I never dreamed of winning Wimbledon, and I did it twice, so it’s something truly special for me.
Of course, I will miss Wimbledon, I will miss tennis, and I will miss the fans too. But I’m ready for the next chapter of my life," Kvitova shared on court after playing (and losing) her final match in the tournament.
