"I wish I could have been more aggressive at certain moments," Gauff says after her victory against Fernandez in Beijing
Coco Gauff praised her opponent Leylah Fernandez after their third-round match at the WTA 1000 in Beijing.
Gauff advances to the round of 16 in Beijing. The American defeated Leylah Fernandez (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) in a closely contested match. Ultimately, the defending champion continues her run. In a post-match press conference following her suspenseful victory, the world No. 3 player reflected on her performance of the day.
"I played against Leylah (Fernandez) earlier this year (in the third round of the Australian Open) and I knew it would be a tougher match today, simply because I felt she was playing very well. She beat Maria (Sakkari) with a convincing result (6-2, 6-0).
She recently won the Washington tournament. I knew she would approach this match differently. I had to adapt. But I'm happy to have overcome this hurdle.
I thought she was aggressive, she was hitting the ball very well.
She also didn't give me many free points. I wish I could have been more aggressive at certain moments. I noticed she increased her aggression in the second set. I think in that 3-2 game, on the break points, I should have put more depth on the ball.
The second set was very competitive. I think I had opportunities on return. I felt I was becoming a bit too passive. Then, in the final game, I made two double faults. I don't even remember what happened.
But she played well. I knew how the first set had gone, it was very competitive. A few points don't go your way and you lose the set. But yes, she played very good tennis," Gauff told Punto de Break.
