iafoe skips the Olympics: "It's insignificant compared to what I'm trying to do at the US Open".
It's the beginning of a hecatomb of withdrawals for this summer's Olympic Games in Paris. The Olympic tournament means a return to clay, which is not to everyone's taste. A number of top players have already announced their withdrawal.
They include Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov, Jiri Lehecka, Aryna Sabelenka, Ben Shelton, Madison Keys, Sebastian Korda and Ons Jabeur.
A new addition to this long list is Frances Tiafoe. The American player, much appreciated by the public for his attacking and spectacular tennis, has decided not to play, preferring to concentrate on the US Open, his main objective for the season: "I don't want to go back to playing on clay.
The Games are insignificant compared to what I'm trying to do at the US Open. This is my tournament. I love my country, but I think I need to think about myself and my career."
