"Iga and Aryna are far ahead of the rest of the pack," Petkovic's take on women's tennis
In an interview shared by Tennis Up To Date, former player Andrea Petkovic shared her perspective on the state of women's tennis. According to her, even though Grand Slams aren’t consistently won by the same players, as is often the case on the men’s tour, two names stand out far above the rest.
"I’ve said it many times—for me, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are the two best players in the world. They’re like Sinner and Alcaraz. The problem is, they aren’t as consistent as them in Grand Slam tournaments.
The others—Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula—can knock them out from time to time, which happens less often in men’s tennis. But when everyone is playing their best tennis, Iga and Aryna are miles ahead of the rest of the field."
Indeed, looking at the statistics, out of the last 20 Grand Slams (since Roland-Garros 2020), 9 have been won by one of these two players. We can also add the three finals lost by the Belarusian.
