"I'm sorry for him, I hope he manages to qualify for the ATP Finals," Sonego reflects on his victory against Musetti
In an all-Italian matchup, Lorenzo Sonego eliminated his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, who suffers a significant setback in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals.
Despite a strong start, Musetti, the world No. 8, couldn't maintain his level and fell in three sets to Lorenzo Sonego (3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in 1h55). The latter reacted to his win and wished his compatriot good luck in the race to qualify for the Turin Masters.
"The attitude was the key. I wasn't satisfied with the first set. Lorenzo (Musetti) is a player who is difficult to get into the match against, but I fought point by point and stayed confident because I had trained well in recent days.
The match then shifted; it was essential to hold my serve in the second set. I'm obviously happy with this victory, but I'm sorry for him, I know he's in contention for the ATP Finals in Turin. I hope he still manages to qualify.
I want to finish the year well; it's always unpleasant to lose so many matches during the season, but the important thing is to train consistently and find good form.
We'll now see how the rest of the tournament goes," Sonego told Super Tennis. In the next round on Thursday, he will face Daniil Medvedev, whom he has never beaten in three previous encounters.
