Immortal Fognini topples Ruud at Wimbledon!
Casper Ruud just doesn't like playing on grass. At the age of 25, the world number 8 has yet to progress beyond the second round in London, and he won't be doing so again this year.
Faced with the inexhaustible Fabio Fognini, the Norwegian gave in. Faced with a Transalpine who was very successful, particularly on important points (saving 7 break points out of 9), Ruud finally succumbed after more than 3 hours of combat (6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3).
For his part, Fognini achieved his best result of the season. Taking advantage of a surface on which his opponent still suffers from major deficiencies, the veteran Italian was able to tighten up his game when needed to snatch his ticket for the third round.
Not widely tipped for retirement, the 37-year-old right-hander has silenced many critics and will now challenge the winner of the match between Bautista Agut and Sonego for a place in the second week.
