"In the second set, I quickly collapsed," Musetti reflects on his defeat against Alcaraz at the ATP Finals
Lorenzo Musetti was playing for a spot in the semifinals of the Turin Masters this Thursday evening in the final group stage match of the Jimmy Connors Group. But the Italian lost in two sets to Carlos Alcaraz (6-4, 6-1), which also ended his season.
Musetti gave it his all, but he didn't have enough resources to force his destiny and reach the ATP Finals semifinals. Competing in the Masters tournament for the first time in his career, the world number 9, who has played an enormous amount of matches in recent months, was defeated by a solid Alcaraz.
The latter took the opportunity to definitively secure his position as world number 1 at the end of the season. For Musetti, the journey ends in the group stage. Before heading on vacation, the Italian reflected on his loss against the Spaniard in a press conference.
"I tried to start strong, because that's the only way to compete with Carlos (Alcaraz). But he served very well. He put a lot of pressure on me. It was difficult physically. He played incredible tennis. I hope to get my revenge one day and reach the semifinals myself.
He put a lot of pressure on me in the rallies, I've sometimes seen him play with a lot of ups and downs, but here, he plays even better. He was very aggressive on the returns, I was impressed by the speed and power of his first shot after the serve, it's really difficult to handle.
In the first set, I served well and stayed in the match, but, in the second, I quickly collapsed," he stated just minutes after his defeat to Tennis World Italia.
