Isner Believes Zverev Will Bounce Back: "I'm Not Pessimistic About Him"
Alexander Zverev is going through a rough patch. After reaching the Australian Open final against Jannik Sinner, the German, now ranked world No. 3, has struggled to digest this latest Grand Slam disappointment.
Since then, he hasn’t made it to a single semifinal on the ATP Tour and suffered early exits in Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo, for example.
On the *Nothing Major Podcast*, John Isner, a former professional player and winner of the 2018 Miami Masters, discussed Zverev’s slump but doesn’t seem particularly worried about him in the medium term.
"Maybe it’s time for him to hit the reset button. When you have so many bad results, there are two options: train harder or take a break.
For me, in his case, stepping away from the game for a bit might not be such a bad idea. Put the rackets down for a few days and clear your head. His game is clearly still there.
I don’t think this is a situation where he needs to be on the court hitting a million balls to regain that feeling.
I imagine there’s a lot of pressure on him now, especially since he has points to defend from his Rome title and Roland-Garros final. He had a chance to rise to world No. 1 with Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal, but he couldn’t capitalize on it.
I’m not pessimistic about him. He took some time off after losing to Berrettini in Monte-Carlo, and we’ll see how things unfold," he said.
