"It makes you humble and increases your compassion for others," Evert shares her battle with cancer
A true tennis legend, Chris Evert was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2022. It was devastating news, forcing the former player to undergo chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. She recounted this significant period in an interview shared by Tennis Up To Date.
"When I was going through chemotherapy, people would always come up to me and say: 'You're so brave. I don't know how you do it.' And I would look at them and reply: 'What's the alternative? What else can I do? You would do the same thing in my place.'
It doesn't matter that I'm a famous athlete, healthy and in great shape; I'm one of the millions of people around the world who have cancer and are undergoing chemotherapy.
When you're sitting in that room and the chemotherapy is being injected into your veins, you can't help but look around and see all the other people doing the same thing. It makes you humble. And it increases your compassion for others."
A difficult time for the American, especially since her sister Jeanne lost her life to cancer in 2020.
