"It really frustrates me," Pegula reacts to early exit in Montreal

Defending Canadian Open champion Jessica Pegula will not complete a three-peat. Despite a strong start against Latvian player Anastasija Sevastova, the world No. 4 American ultimately fell in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) and will not advance to the round of 16.
Last year’s US Open finalist addressed the press after her third-round exit in Montreal and tried to explain the reasons behind her defeat.
"When you let your opponents back into the match, they can really play well. I think that’s what happened in the third set, but it was my performance midway through the second set that bothered me the most.
It didn’t go very well—I didn’t feel like I was playing great tennis. Sometimes, I have a lot of ups and downs, I play carelessly, and I don’t like that. It really frustrates me. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so I don’t like having to say this.
You have to find a way to push through and not feel sorry for yourself or make excuses. I felt pretty confident, knowing I like playing here. I’ve always had good results in Canada.
I’ve come to this tournament before without feeling like I’m at my best, but I’ve always managed to turn things around. I was hoping to go a few more rounds.
That didn’t happen, and I’ll have to talk with my team to figure out how to get my game back. Sometimes in tennis, nothing makes sense," lamented the 31-year-old player minutes after her defeat in an interview with *Punto De Break*.
