WTA 1000 Montreal: Swiatek and Svitolina Cruise, Anisimova Defeats Raducanu

Early this Friday, Jessica Pegula, the two-time defending champion in Canada, was upset by Anastasija Sevastova. This marked the biggest surprise of the day, as the favorites otherwise held firm in this WTA 1000 event in Montreal.
Second-seeded Iga Swiatek wasted little time on the court. Facing Eva Lys, the Polish star took control from the opening points and comfortably advanced to the round of 16 (6-2, 6-2 in 1h12). She will now face Clara Tauson for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina, who closed out the day’s schedule, spent less than an hour on court against Anna Kalinskaya. In just 54 minutes, the Ukrainian, who fired 8 aces and secured 4 breaks in this one-sided match, wrapped up the victory while conceding only two games to the Russian (6-1, 6-1).
For the third time in as many meetings, Svitolina defeated Kalinskaya, and the world No. 13 will now face Amanda Anisimova as she aims to return to the quarterfinals in Canada.
The Wimbledon finalist, Anisimova, won the marquee matchup of the night against Emma Raducanu. This was their third meeting in 2025, but for the first time, the American emerged victorious.
In just 1h03, Anisimova—who claimed her first WTA 1000 title in Doha earlier this season—advanced to the round of 16 (6-2, 6-1) and will attempt to overcome Svitolina, despite trailing 3-1 in their head-to-head record. Their last encounter, however, dates back to September 2021.
Finally, another notable round of 16 matchup in the bottom half of the draw will feature Madison Keys against Karolina Muchova. The Australian Open champion this year rallied past Catherine McNally (2-6, 6-3, 6-3), while the Czech player, who has been struggling with a left wrist injury in recent weeks, found her rhythm in this tournament.
The world No. 14, who initially struggled against Belinda Bencic, ultimately dug deep to secure a three-set victory and advance to the fourth round in Quebec (6-7, 6-2, 6-3).
